The Modernist wineries of the Conca de Barberà are much more than buildings dedicated to wine: they reflect the collective spirit of a region that knew how to reinvent itself. Created at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the cooperative movement, these spaces symbolize the strength of farming communities that, in the face of hardship, chose to join forces and look ahead with ambition.
Their architecture is striking for its combination of elegance and functionality: large light-filled halls, impressive arches, handcrafted details, and a monumentality that has earned them the nickname “cathedrals of wine.” Each building expresses the desire to dignify vineyard work and highlight the region’s winemaking culture.
Today, many of these wineries are still active, producing wines and welcoming visitors who wish to discover a unique heritage where history, architecture, and wine tradition come together in perfect harmony.
In the Conca region, there are several cooperative wineries of major importance: L'Espluga de Francolí (1912), Sarral (1914), Barberà de la Conca (1917), Rocafort de Queralt (1918), Montblanc (1919), and Pira (1919). They were designed by important architects such as Cèsar Martinell and Pere Domènech i Roura. You can visit these wineries, as well as many private cellars, and enjoy high-quality wine tourism experiences.
